Watchdata PROXKey USB token

ProxKey is a USB crypto token that holds your Class 3 digital signature certificate (DSC). Your signing keys are created on the token's secure chip and stay there: the private key can't be exported, so it can't be copied off the token.

  • FIPS 140-2 Level 3Validated (NIST certificate #4159) to the US standard for cryptographic hardware, at the level that adds tamper protection.
  • No driver to installWindows recognises the token with its built-in driver, and the ProxKey tool installs itself when you plug it in.
  • Windows, macOS and LinuxGet the Windows and Mac tools from our drivers page if you need to reinstall.

Getting started

  1. Plug in the token. On Windows, the ProxKey tool offers to install itself. On a Mac, install the tool from our drivers page first.
  2. Set your PIN. A new token asks for a PIN of 6 to 32 letters or numbers. Keep it safe: too many wrong attempts lock the token.
  3. Put your certificate on it. Your certifying authority downloads your DSC straight onto the token, and the ProxKey tool registers it on your computer.
  4. Sign. Plug in the token and enter your PIN whenever a portal such as GST, income tax or MCA asks for your digital signature.

Built around a secure chip

ProxKey uses a 32-bit smart card chip with its own operating system, the same kind of chip used in bank cards. Signing, encryption and decryption all happen inside the chip, so your private key is never exposed to your computer. Applications talk to the token through standard interfaces such as PKCS#11 and Microsoft CSP.

What FIPS 140-2 Level 3 means

FIPS 140-2 is the US government standard for cryptographic hardware, with four levels. Level 3 adds physical protection that detects and responds to tampering, and requires identity-based authentication before the token's keys can be used. That is why banks, enterprises and government agencies widely accept FIPS-validated tokens.

NIST lists ProxKey's module as the WatchKey ProX USB Token Cryptographic Module, certificate #4159, validated in February 2022. FIPS 140-2 certificates have since moved to NIST's historical list as the newer FIPS 140-3 standard takes over. View certificate on NIST

ProxKey's new FIPS 140-3 module, the ProxKey Cryptographic Module, has been under test at NIST since March 2026. NIST gives it a certificate number and level once testing is complete. See NIST's Implementation Under Test list
